The main objective of the meeting was to make a final decision on the adoption of an updated algorithm for poliovirus isolation which is now used by Global Polio Laboratory Network (GPLN) laboratories in all other WHO regions. Adopting the new testing algorithm will help ensure that laboratories use fully standardized methods across the Region and will improve timeliness of detection of programmatically important polioviruses. The possible implications of using the new testing format and plans for its implementation were discussed at length based on the experience in some laboratories that adopted the change and responses to a comprehensive survey sent to all laboratories by the WHO Regional Office for Europe. The performance of the Polio Laboratory Network in the European Region and the importance of laboratory containment as required by WHO guidelines were also discussed. The meeting produced a set of recommendations for further action and consideration.
