Nearly 3.3 million children under five years of age die every year due to birth defects globally. An estimate of 3.2 million of those who survive may have lifelong mental, physical, auditory or visual disability. As the morbidity due to communicable disease is decreasing, birth defects is taking prominence as a significant cause of under-five year morbidity and mortality. The irony is that most of these conditions are preventable with a very high coverage of available interventions.WHO-South-East Asia Regional Office in collaboration with CDC, USA, had taken the lead to address the challenges faced in the Region on birth defects prevention. A regional strategic framework was developed through expert group consultation. It was shared among Member States to prepare a national action plan to address newborn health and birth defects. A series of regional and national level consultations and training programmes were conducted to establish a birth defects surveillance network among the regional countries. Resource materials, guidelines to build capacity and promote newborn health in the Region were produced.In this context, the South-East Asian Regional review meeting of neonatal- perinatal database and birth defects surveillance was organized by the CAH Unit of the WHO South-East Asia Regional Office on 19th to 21st August 2014, at New Delhi, to review the performance of national networks on newborn health and birth defects, to identify strengths and challenges, to introduce and demonstrate SEARO software of the electronic neonatal-perinatal database and birth defects surveillance and to plan expansion/strengthening of national networks for newborn health and birth defects and the database. This report presents the proceedings, conclusions and recommendations from the regional network meeting.
