The current Internet is a large-scale distributed system whose sub-componentssuch as addressing, protocols, algorithms, services, need to scale in time with therapid growth of Internet traffic volumes. Moreover, there is a high level of inter-action between different subcomponents of the Internet sometimes in undesiredways – for example, denial of service attacks can jeopardize the operation ofa commercial network. With these challenges in place, operations and manage-ment of IP networks have become increasingly important. This necessitates agood understanding of the emerging technical and scientific problems in thecurrent Internet, and lessons from such understanding will be particularly im-portant for future Internet design and management. Building on the success ofthe previous events, we wanted IPOM 2008 to focus on network managementchallenges for the current Internet as well as on future Internet design.
