Recognizing that global climate change is posingever growing threats to public health security, in2008 the WHO Regional Office for Europe starteda two-year project funded through the InternationalClimate Initiative of the German Federal Ministryfor the Environment, Nature Conservation andNuclear Safety. “Protecting health from climatechange. A seven-country initiative” focuses ontaking action against the health effects of climatechange in seven European countries: Albania,Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation,Tajikistan, the former Yugoslav Republic ofMacedonia and Uzbekistan.The project supports actions and pilot-testssome interventions in countries that are alreadyexperiencing climate-related problems (such asextreme events, water scarcity, glacier melting,permafrost thawing) that are projected to havesevere health effects. All countries ratifiedthe United Nations Framework Conventionon Climate Change and are committed to domore to protect health from climate changeby increasing awareness and improvingintersectoral cooperation. Activities are carriedout by national Governments through bilateralagreements with the WHO Regional Office forEurope in the framework of the WHO globalworkplan on climate change and health. |
