Tóm tắt :

In many small countries, cancer has taken the place of cardiovascular diseases as the leading cause of premature mortality. In small countries, the leading cause of premature cancer death among males is lung cancer, followed by colorectal and pancreatic cancer; among females, the leading cause is breast cancer, followed by lung, then both ovarian and colorectal cancer. This report extracts data from WHO’s 2023 global survey assessing national capacity for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases for the 11 countries of the WHO Regional Office for Europe’s Small Countries Initiative (SCI) to better understand national screening and early diagnosis programmes for breast, cervical, colorectal, prostate, lung and gastric cancers. The data highlight the need for early diagnosis pathways to be set up or strengthened as well as the requirement to ensure that organized population-based cancer screening programmes are implemented, with strong quality assurance and robust data systems. The importance of investing in primary prevention and early diagnosis of all types of cancer is also stressed. Furthermore, as half of the SCI countries are not members of the European Union (EU), an inequity issue arises from the fact that they miss out on EU funding opportunities for research. vii, 24 p.
