The purpose of the consultation was to review workforce development in the field of toxicology, to discuss the present position in various countries, to predict needs and to recommend a programme for training toxicologists. In the European Region, and indeed worldwide, there is a dearth of experienced professional toxicologists, particularly those capable of evaluating data in terms of their practical significance to humankind. It is also important that administrators and auxiliary personnel working with these experts have some experience and basic knowledge of the science. There is a diversity both of practice in the training of toxicologists and the curricula followed. However, this should not stand in the way of developing an integrated approach to the topic. Lessons could be drawn from the experiences of each Member State to make a more rapid advance in the solution of mutual workforce problems. |
