Tóm tắt :

79 p. In Europe, no less than in other parts of the world, the majority of patients suffering from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are treated in general medical practice by physicians who have not received adequate training in the management of this group of diseases and who, as a consequence, pay insufficient attention to correct laboratory diagnosis and contact tracing. Apart from giving effective treatment, the essence of good management of the STDs is to make the correct and best use of available laboratory facilities and to look beyond the patient to the source of the infection and to seek out those to whom it may have been passed. The need for simple guidelines to the management of these disorders for physicians in general practice has been apparent for some years. The Symposium on the Surveillance and Control of the Sexually Transmitted Diseases organized by the WHO Regional Office for Europe in Vienna in September 1976 recommended that consideration should be given by WHO to the preparation of a practical manual on the management of the STDs that would contribute to improved control of these diseases through the more effective treatment of the many cases that occur each year. The Thirty-First World Health Assembly, meeting in Geneva in May 1978, also included control of the STDs on its agenda. The technical discussions emphasized that the prevalence of several of these diseases had been increasing for a number of years and had reached seriously high levels in many countries. The appearance of this guide is, therefore, both timely and highly appropriate.
