Tóm tắt : | Many companies invest in the common stock of other corporations. Some companies invest in common stock to earn a favorable return by taking advantage of potentially profitable situations. Others acquire common stock to (a) gain control over other com¬ panies, (b) enter new market or product areas through companies established in those areas, (c) ensure a supply of raw materials or other production inputs, (d) ensure a cus¬tomer for production output, (e)gain economies associated with greater size, (f)diver¬sify, (g)gain new technology, or (h)lessen competition. Examples of intercorporate investments include IBM’s acquisition of a sizable portion of Intel’s stock to ensure a supply of computer components, AT&T’s purchase of the stock of McCaw Cellular Communications to gain a foothold in the cellular phone market, and Texaco’s acqui¬sition of Getty Oil’s stock lo acquire oil and gas reserves. |
