It is said that all living creatures in the world have their own ways of communicating with each others. For example, the ants giving information by touching others’ antennas when carrying their food, or the birds, the dolphins use their own sounds to transfer and receive information. We human being use our unique tool which no other creature may have. We mostly use language to talk to others. However, each nation and each ethnic has their different language. In my home country, Vietnam, there are 54 ethnics. Not all of them have written language, but they have their own spoken language. Similarly, we have hundreds of languages all over the world. To communicate with people who speak other languages rather than their mother tongue, people may apply different techniques, including the verbal and nonverbal ones. For the first case, they use body language such as gesture, facial expression. They express emotion and information through the movement of their body, especially their hands and their faces. For the verbal one, people sometimes create new words, using their mother tongue to replace its equivalent in the target language, paraphrasing or even translating word for word. Among these verbal techniques used by elementary students, replacing the target language by a native one, known as language switch, and translating word for word, known as literal translation are used most frequently. Despite the mistakes and errors they make in terms of linguistics, they are successful in terms of communication. From my own experience, I notice that many students who apply the above strategies succeed in not only communicating but also somehow motivate their language learning. This finding encourages me to do this research study. Basing on a similar research which was conducted by Shamala Paramasivam in Malaysia, this report uses a variety of speaking and writing activities to identify how first year students at Foreign Trade University (hereafter written as FTU) use language transfer as a communication strategy and also a learning strategy in their English classes. Besides, it is hoped to get a deep insight into the effects of the first language on the second, Vietnamese and English, respectively then propose some suggestions for better English teaching and learning.
