58 p. Issues technical advice intended to guide the selection and improve the design of pesticide application equipment used in vector control operations. Addressed to manufacturers as well as to specialists in vector control, the book concentrates on a number of recent trends that are redefining the approach to effective vector control. These include intense concern about the environmental impact of chemicals, growing appreciation for the necessity of an integrated approach to control, and a corresponding move towards such non-chemical measures as environmental management and the use of biological agents. Noting the continuing need for pesticides, particularly in the emergency response to epidemics, the book places particular emphasis on equipment that is both suitable for use by communities and capable of delivering accurate and judicious quantities of pesticides. The report reviews problems encountered in the field use of seven main types of currently available equipment, moving from hand-operated compression sprayers to the use of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. For each type of equipment, an effort is made to pinpoint problems related to performance, durability, operation, maintenance, cost-effectiveness, and safety, and then to suggest the specific design modifications needed to overcome these problems. In keeping with the emphasis on non-chemical methods of control, subsequent sections outline equipment requirements for the use of entomopathogens, larvivorous fish, and other biological agents and offer advice on the selection of machinery and other equipment for use in environmental management strategies. Details range from an evaluation of bacteria strains most suitable for vector control to a table listing the applications of animal-drawn machines in eight operations commonly required for environmental management. The remaining sections address safety issues and discuss the crucial roles of training and research
