A practical guide to the many organizational and managerial problems encountered in efforts to integrate tuberculosis control into primary health care systems. Conveying the collective views of 27 experts in tuberculosis and public health, the book issues guidance on the basis of technical knowledge and practical experiences that can help programme managers anticipate problems, plan effectively, and avoid common pitfalls. Information is specific to the realities of facilities and the trained staff and resources available in developing countries. Chapters offer key recommendations for programme policy and management concerning BCG vaccination and chemoprophylaxis, case-finding and treatment, and the organization of sputum smear examinations. A chapter devoted to chemotherapeutic regimens extends practical advice on short-course versus long-course regimens, continuous versus intermittent regimens, hospitalization versus ambulatory treatment, and what to do in the case of bacteriological failure and relapse.
