Tóm tắt :

98 p. Evaluates the effects of DDT and its metabolites on the reproduction, growth, and survival of populations of organisms in the environment. Adopting an ecotoxicological approach, the report considers only those studies that have investigated the toxic effects of DDT at environmental levels likely to arise from recommended uses. Both immediate toxicity and long-term sublethal effects are considered in an effort to profile the full range of ecological hazards posed by DDT. The opening sections summarize properties of DDT and its metabolites that help explain their resistance to degradation, their widespread persistence in the environment, and their high potential for bioaccumulation. The most extensive sections cite the numerous controlled laboratory experiments that have documented the direct toxicity and long-term sublethal effects of DDT and its metabolites on micro-organisms, aquatic organisms, and terrestrial ecosystems, including especially detailed information on the lowered reproductive rate of birds. On the basis of this review, the book concludes that DDT and its metabolites should be regarded as a major hazard to the environment
