Tóm tắt : | Regional Committee for Africa Fifty-seventh SessionBrazzaville, Republic of Congo, 27–31 August, Provisional agenda item 7.8 The tuberculosis epidemic in the WHO African Region has reached emergency proportions.Based on recent surveillance data, the Region accounts for 25% of the global notified tuberculosiscases but only 10% of the world population. During the past ten years, tuberculosis notificationrates have more than doubled in most countries. While the increase is widespread, it is mostnoticeable where HIV prevalence is high. On average, 35% of tuberculosis patients in the Regionare co-infected with HIV, and tuberculosis accounts for approximately 40% of deaths in peopleliving with HIV/AIDS.2. Several randomized trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of joint tuberculosis andHIV/AIDS interventions in reducing morbidity and mortality among the dually infected.Notwithstanding the recognized importance of co-infection in driving the TB epidemic as well asevidence of effective delivery of joint interventions, TB and HIV/AIDS control programmescontinue to implement control activities independent of each other. The result has been lowcoverage, limited access and inefficient use of scarce resources. |
