EURO; HQEnglish onlyEUR/ICP/EHRO 02 05 0217 p. Increases in temperature and changes in precipitation patterns have occurred all over Europe and the world during most of this century. Such climatic changes past, present and future may lead to the occurrence of specific direct and indirect health effects. To address the public health policy issues related to the anticipated climate change in Europe, a working group was convened by the Rome Division of the European Centre for Environment and Health. The group was given the dual tasks of assessing the likelihood that early effects of climate change on human health are already present and detectable, and of identifying appropriate indicators for any such changes. The different possible health outcomes were reviewed in detail and potentially useful instruments for their detection and monitoring discussed. A second meeting of the same working group was planned, with the aim of developing specific recommendations for European ministers of environment and health, to be considered at the Third European Conference on Environment and Health in London in June 1999
