EUR/ICP/TRNS 02 01 0277 p. The aim of the health and environment geographic information system (HEGIS), developed by the Bilthoven Division of the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health, is to advance the assessment of health impacts of environmental contamination as well as to identify areas or populations where public health interventions are needed. This document summarizes the available information on ambient air quality in urban areas of the WHO European Region. Data on ambient concentrations of NO2, SO2, ozone, total suspended particulates and black smoke are included. The aim is to facilitate the assessment of exposure to air pollution and the use of these data for estimating impacts of the pollution on human health in Europe. The data on at least one pollutant are presented for 263 towns (each with more than 50 000 residents) comprising, in total, more than 158 million people
