A consultative meeting of five central Asian republics (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) represented by the Ministries of Health, Foreign Affairs, Justice and Parliaments on the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control was held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on 11 and 12 December 2003. The meeting was organized jointly by the Government of Kyrgyzstan and WHO Regional Office for Europe. The aims of the meeting were to raise awareness; analyse national tobacco control legislation; exchange information related to the signing, ratifying and entering into force of the Convention; and, to promote the building of national capacity on tobacco control in countries. The meeting was an important milestone in these processes and participants considered that further intercountry and intersectoral dialogue, as well as technical support from WHO, would be important for the achievement of these aims. The meeting also adopted a set of recommendations EUR/03/504137415 p.
